Monthly Meeting – Discuss Democratic Beliefs and Principles
February 21 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pmFree
Join us at 6:30 pm for social time and our meeting will begin at 7:00 pm in the County Building at 220 W Ellsworth, Midland, MI.
Below is the first draft of Democratic Beliefs and Principles developed by some Midland Dems. We will be reviewing and discussing these items and deciding what is most important to share as part of our messaging/marketing in our community.
-All Michiganders deserve both a living wage and equal pay for equal work. No fully-employed, hard-working Michigander should have to raise their family in poverty.
-Michigan Democrats support the ability of employees to unionize and bargain on their own behalf. Over the years our union workers have been true American patriots, bringing us the weekend, sick leave, overtime pay, and maternity/paternity leave. That legacy deserves our honor and respect.
-We support repealing the pension tax on seniors.
-Medicare and the government need to be able to negotiate the price of drugs and medical procedures, as Medicaid and insurance companies can.
-Providers of medical services will not be denied payment by any governmental unit (federal, state or local) for any legal medical procedures.
-Post-secondary public education should be affordable for those who wish to acquire advanced certifications or attend college or trade school. No Michigander who wishes to improve his or her situation in life should be prevented from doing so by excessive costs.
-Our government must be as transparent as possible, and every elected official must be subject to the laws of our state like all other citizens. No one should be above the law, regardless of wealth or position.
-A strong, well-funded, and well-staffed environmental agencies are essential in order to protect our natural resources, and should operate in a manner that preserves the environment while minimizing regulation.
-No Michigander shall be discriminated against on the basis of religion, race, national origin, sexual orientation, level of income, or ethnic background.
-All Michiganders, and indeed all Americans, have the right to pursue life, liberty, and happiness as they see fit.
-We support the immigration policy that has been the hallmark of the United States throughout its entire history, one that welcomes people from all parts of the world who want to come to this country to work and raise families and contribute to America.
