Monthly Meeting – Discuss Democratic Beliefs and Principles

February 21 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm UTC+0

Join us at 6:30 pm for social time and our meeting will begin at 7:00 pm in the County Building at 220 W Ellsworth, Midland, MI.

Below is the first draft of Democratic Beliefs and Principles developed by some Midland Dems. We will be reviewing and discussing these items and deciding what is most important to share as part of our messaging/marketing in our community.

Michigan Democrats believe it is our duty to do whatever we can to help those less fortunate than ourselves.  We believe in valuing all of Michigan’s families.  For this reason, we are dedicated to the following principles:

-All Michiganders deserve a government whose policies encourage long-term job creation and growth.  We believe this can best be accomplished by focusing on infrastructure, manufacturing, education, research, technology and clean energy.
-All Michiganders deserve both a living wage and equal pay for equal work.  No fully-employed, hard-working Michigander should have to raise their family in poverty.
-Michigan Democrats support the ability of employees to unionize and bargain on their own behalf.  Over the years our union workers have been true American patriots, bringing us the weekend, sick leave, overtime pay, and maternity/paternity leave.  That legacy deserves our honor and respect.
-We support repealing the pension tax on seniors.
-All Michiganders deserve to have quality healthcare affordable to them, regardless of income, age, sex, race, religion, or pre-existing condition.
-Medicare and the government need to be able to negotiate the price of drugs and medical procedures, as Medicaid and insurance companies can.
-Providers of medical services will not be denied payment by any governmental unit (federal, state or local) for any legal medical procedures.
-Our children deserve a high-quality and well-funded public education.  Any policy which makes education unaffordable is harming both our families and our future.
-Post-secondary public education should be affordable for those who wish to acquire advanced certifications or attend college or trade school.  No Michigander who wishes to improve his or her situation in life should be prevented from doing so by excessive costs.
-All Michiganders deserve to be fairly represented by their government, and no group of people should be politically favored or disenfranchised.  Therefore we support the establishment of state legislative and congressional districts by a politically independent commission in order to prevent gerrymandering by the political party currently in power.
-Our government must be as transparent as possible, and every elected official must be subject to the laws of our state like all other citizens.  No one should be above the law, regardless of wealth or position.
-Our children deserve to be given a healthy planet, and our families deserve a beautiful state in which to hunt, fish, and enjoy nature.  Therefore our government must work to protect and preserve our precious natural resources, especially the health and integrity of the Great Lakes.
-A strong, well-funded, and well-staffed environmental agencies are essential in order to protect our natural resources, and should operate in a manner that preserves the environment while minimizing regulation.
-All Michiganders have the right to practice the religion of their choice as long as they do not try to impose their religious beliefs on others.
-No Michigander shall be discriminated against on the basis of religion, race, national origin, sexual orientation, level of income, or ethnic background.
-All Michiganders, and indeed all Americans, have the right to pursue life, liberty, and happiness as they see fit.
-Michigan Democrats support the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution.  Law-abiding citizens have the right to own firearms but also the responsibility for their safe use, care, and storage.  —This means firearms should be registered.  We register those who can vote, those who purchase firearms should also be registered
-We support the immigration policy that has been the hallmark of the United States throughout its entire history, one that welcomes people from all parts of the world who want to come to this country to work and raise families and contribute to America.
